| When Jeff was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma of the pelvis in March 2006, we were devastated. The doctors said that he'd have to endure at least a year of chemotherapy and radiation if he had a chance of winning this battle. The first chemotherapy treatment was given in April 2006 and that began the first of many hospital stays. The hospital can be a lonely place when you have cancer or are the caregiver to someone with cancer. You feel very helpless and if you're like me, you look for something to do or for somewhere you can help. Jeff and I prayed for God to show us where we were needed and the first thoughts of the Healing Companions program began to take shape. Of course! We knew how wonderful doodles were and how they excel in obedience, service and therapy training. We thought of how wonderful our dogs have been to us during our struggle with cancer and wanted others to be able to have the unconditional love that a doodle gives. We decided we could help make that happen. |
